Unions Representing 40,000 Laborers Endorse Ben Kallos for Manhattan Borough President

New York, NY – The New York State Laborers’ Political Action Committee comprised of 24 local unions and 5 district councils endorsed New York City Council Member Ben Kallos for Manhattan Borough President. Early in his career, Kallos represented the LiUNA! affiliates including the Mason Tenders District Council as a union-side labor lawyer.

“Ben Kallos is the real deal when it comes to workers’ rights. His law to track construction safety incidents is making daily life safer for Laborers,” said Robert Bonanza, Business Manager, Mason Tenders District Council, LiUNA Eastern Region.

An affiliate of Laborers International Union of North America (LiUNA), the New York State Laborers Union represents 40,000 workers statewide in the construction industry and other fields. Nine Laborers local unions and three district councils are based in New York City.

Ben Kallos, is a Democrat and Co-Chair of the Progressive Caucus who has distinguished in his unwavering support for working families who have organized into labor unions. As a legislator, Kallos authored the law to count every injury and life lost on a construction site with steep fines for disreputable contractors that would hide injuries on the job (Local Law 78 of 2017). He was also a co-prime sponsor of laws to require site safety supervisors and safety training on construction sites. Kallos has also carried legislation to require prevailing wage, training, and apprenticeship on city-subsidized construction projects as well as to offer private sector workers to an auto-IRA retirement savings plan.
