Dear Brothers and Sisters,
The Iron Workers District Council and its [local] unions endorse Council Member Ben Kallos for Manhattan Borough President because we need more elected officials who will stand up to anyone when it comes to doing what's right for our brothers and sisters in labor.
When a developer took government subsidies only to go "open shop" leaving iron workers out, Council Member Ben Kallos joined us in fighting for good paying job and safe construction. When the developer threatened Kallos politically, we had his back, and he wrote a piece for local media calling on the developer to protect workers and residents with proper training. When the developer threatened to sue Kallos, then sent a cease and desist, he went even further by citing OSHA violations and recounting the lives lost on prior construction by the builder, demanding training and protections for workers.
Kallos has used the power vested in him by the people of this city to protect our working families. As Chair of a Land Use subcommittee Kallos in response to a request of the Iron Workers he brought our brothers and sisters in labor together to identify every new construction project on city land and pressured developers to train their workers and pay them enough so they wouldn’t need the very affordable housing they were building.
Whether at the construction sites in his district or at City Hall, Council Member Ben Kallos has been a strong voice for the working families that build our city and we need him as our next Manhattan Borough President. The Iron Workers District Council representing New York City Locals #40, #46, #197, #361, and #580 are proud to endorse Council Member Ben Kallos as the next Manhattan Borough President.
